my first apiary

my first apiary

I started beekeeping in 2009 in Gainesville, FL. The best decision of my life! I was finishing a bachelor’s in English with no life direction etc. and stumbled across an old friend of mine who ran 400 hives and needed some help to run the farm. At first I thought of it as a temporary means for food but after the first day I found myself with hands the size of baseball mitts from all the stings and happier than I’d been in a while. Since then I have worked with bees full time and now have about 80 hives of my own.  At the moment I focus primarily on honey production with a couple small pollination jobs on the side but my real interest is in queen rearing. Some day some how I’ll have enough bees so that they can support themselves and me but until then I work at the University of Florida’s Honey Bee Research and Extension Lab researching native pollinators’ role in crop pollination. I’m now tired of writing about myself and future posts will be much more interesting and focus on practicing beekeeping rather than how it has changed my life. Cheers.
